Two Reasons Why I Won't Turn On Chatter

1.)

Chatter_stop_auto_follow
That box needs to be checked by default. See this on the IdeaExchange. The last thing I want to do is tell 200+ people that they have to un-follow every record they own one-by-one if they don't want to be bombarded with updates pertaining to records they don't need to be focused on.

On a related note: It would be great to follow / un-follow records based on certain rules / criteria.

2.)

Chatter for specific users needs to be an option. While I understand Salesforce's reasons for not making this an option- users already heavily involved in social media may not want to deal with this.

I also know of multiple Orgs that employ overseas contractors. In many cases- they have a slimmed down SFDC profile with very limited access. Having Chatter available can be confusing and wanting to restrict access to English-speaking only workers is a valid business case.

Every time I get on the phone with Salesforce I am inevitably asked if we've turned on Chatter. I always make the aforementioned two points and am met with silence on the other line. When I can do those two things- I will turn on Chatter.

Chatter Reporting, Dashboards, and Analytics

Inspired by a tweet from @GeraldineGray "Can you report on #chatter or do I need to install an App (for that)", I did some digging and it turns out you do indeed need to install an App for that.

While we've yet to turn on Chatter here at HubSpot (due largely in part to Chatter either being globally on or off, without any middle-ground), I found this in the Salesforce AppExchange: http://ow.ly/36tIq

The (free) app includes 20 pre.configured dashboard components, 25 included reports, and 7 custom report types.

Any early feedback on this?
